Abstract

The first education policy (NEP 1968) which was based on the recommendations of the Kothari
commission, was introduced in the year 1968 by the Indira Gandhi Government This policy
necessitated free and compulsory education for children up to age 14, as enshrined in the
Constitution of India. The second education policy (NEP 1986) was introduced in the year 1986 by
the Rajiv Gandhi Government.
